THE SERIES

A (very) mature new adult urban fantasy series that is scary, sexy and relatable, filled with the supernatural and things that go bump in the night.

In a large, flaky nutshell, the Experiment in Terror Series is an eight-part sci-fi/fantasy/horror series that revolves around a pair of ghost hunters. Well, aspiring ghost hunters, anyway. After filming a creepy experience in her uncle’s dilapidated lighthouse, 22-year old Perry Palomino becomes a YouTube and internet star overnight. She attracts the attention of Dex Foray, a producer and cameraman for a site that specializes in various webisodes, who convinces her to be a host for a low-budget ghost hunting series. The only problem is, neither Perry or Dex are entirely “with it” — I mean, they see ghosts, after all. And when the duo isn’t wrestling with their very notion of reality, they’re grappling with a working relationship that’s deep-cut with sexual tension. As the series moves on, leading Perry and Dex to new locales and supernatural situations, their lives become more and more intertwined, where they discover that ghosts aren’t the only things that can haunt them.

Bio

With her USA Today Bestselling The Artists Trilogy published by Grand Central Publishing, numerous foreign publication deals, and self-publishing success with her Experiment in Terror series, Vancouver-born Karina Halle is a true example of the term “Hybrid Author.” Though her books showcase her love of all things dark, sexy and edgy, she’s a closet romantic at heart and strives to give her characters a HEA…whenever possible.

Karina holds a screenwriting degree from Vancouver Film School and a Bachelor of Journalism from TRU. Her travel writing, music reviews/interviews and photography have appeared in publications such as Consequence of Sound, Mxdwn and GoNomad Travel Guides. She currently lives on an island on the coast of British Columbia where she’s preparing for the zombie apocalypse with her fiance and rescue pup.

Reading Playlists

Music is a huge creative driving force behind my writing. HUGE. Music constantly inspires me and helps to create something out of nothing. It adds emotion and resonance, it stirs up memories from deep inside and makes me look forward to the writing process — if I had to give anyone a co-author credit in the Experiment in Terror series, it would be music itself. In fact, it’s rare that you’ll find me writing without music playing in the background or crammed in my ears.

And it’s not just any music either. The specific music showcased below featured very heavily in the creation of Darkhouse. So much so, that some songs conjure memories of actually sitting down and writing the novel. Rob Dougan’s “Clubbed to Death” reminds me of working in a dark study, writing the scene where Dex and Perry approach the lighthouse for the final time. Or “101 North,” by the underrated rock outfit Tomahawk, recalls the first time the duo hits the road together, bonding (sorta) over their similar music tastes.

The majority of the music below can be a little experimental for some readers and runs on the heavier side of rock and metal (Dex and Perry approved!), but if you’re brave and want to get a taste of what inspires me, please click on the links so that you may purchase the songs or albums (or search www.soundcloud.com to stream them for free). I am firmly against pirating music — remember, artists need to get paid too so they can continue to make music that moves us, and in turn, motivates me to write.

OK, I’m off my soapbox!

Film Articles

Long before I was writing articles on music, I was writing articles on the film industry — the independent film industry in particular. Having gone to school for film production and screenwriting, I had enough of an interest and background to get into the nitty gritty.

Travel Articles

I’ve had the travel bug ever since I was a little girl. With parents born in Norway and Finland, plus a flight attendant mother, it was only natural that I was constantly jetting off somewhere. All these years later and nothing has really changed. If anything, it’s gotten worse. I blame the fact that instead of marching straight off to college when I turned 18, I threw caution to the wind, strapped on a backpack and traveled by myself to New Zealand and Australia, spending about six months there in total.

I’ve taught English in Spain and Italy. I’ve backpacked solo around Europe for three months. I’ve sailed from Los Cabos to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. And lately my music journalism has taken me everywhere from Finland to Poland to Los Angeles, counting in numerous trips to San Francisco. 2011 holds about the same, with Europe in July, plus San Francisco, LA and…well, who knows. Luckily, now I can bring Experiment in Terror everywhere I go and share the fun.

I’ve written travel articles on Spain:

And you can read my defunct travel blog Wander-Lusting. There are lots of good tips on cheap accommodation if you don’t mind searching for them.

Happy Travels!

Music Articles

To me, music is one of the highest, purest forms of art on the planet. It’s right up there with the written word — and in some cases, it surpasses it. Music has the ability to shape and mold us, to make us feel, to make us live, all just by tickling the insides of our eardrums in the most precise way. Music is life. Plain and simple. No wonder music features quite heavily in the lives of Perry and Dex.

I guess it’s no surprise then that I’m also a freelance music journalist. I currently write for Consequence of Sound, Gadfly Dreams and American Noise. You can read some of my work by clicking on the links below.

Still interested? Here’s what to expect from Darkhouse:

There’s always been something a bit off about Perry Palomino. Though she’s been dealing with a quarter-life crisis and post-college syndrome like any other twentysomething, she’s still not what you would call “ordinary.” For one thing, there’s her past which she likes to pretend never happened, and then there’s the fact that she sees ghosts. Luckily for her, that all comes in handy when she stumbles across Dex Foray, an eccentric producer for an upcoming webcast on ghost hunters. Even though the show’s budget is non-existent and Dex himself is a maddening enigma, Perry is instantly drawn into a world that both threatens her life and seduces her with a sense of importance. Her uncle’s haunted lighthouse provides the perfect catalyst and backdrop for a horrific mystery that unravels the threads of Perry’s fragile sanity and causes her to fall for a man, who, like the most dangerous of ghosts, may not be all that he seems.”

Darkhouse” — Book One in the Experiment in Terror Series:
When 22-year old Perry Palomino gets roped into a ghost hunting web series with a slightly unhinged producer called Dex Foray, the pair discover the only thing scarier than dealing with the dead is dealing with each other.
